Solihull mum shows you how it’s done!

Lockdown has changed many things over the past year: the way we interact with family and friends, how we conduct business meetings, the way we use transport and the way we make purchases- whether that’s groceries, clothing etc. One way in which lockdown has changed many lives for the better is the pride in which people are taking of their homes.

Homes have become workplaces, gyms, social spaces and so, as their function has evolved so too has their design. Enter: the lockdown makeover. With many furloughed and finding themselves with before unheard-of surplus time on their hands and limited ways in which to spend it, DIY projects became the past-time a la mode.

With 18% of people renovating their homes during lockdown, Zoopla launched a competition to discover the UK’s best lockdown home renovation. Zoopla received many entries, from garden sheds morphing into home offices to spare rooms transforming into gyms. However, there could be only one winner. Shereena from Solihull claimed the crown with her kitchen renovation, creating a flexible living space for her family to enjoy. Shereena explained to Zoopla, ‘ This living space has really helped us as a family during lockdowns. We have been able to homeschool, have at-home parties as a family and make it fun for the kids and generally just spend time together in the space. The bi-folds bring the garden into the house too so the kids can run inside and out without paying too much attention to what is happening in the outside world. We’re really pleased with our lockdown home makeover, it’s added value to the property as well as increased how much time we spend at home.’

Shereena is testament to the saying when life gives you lemons. She has used lockdown to improve her family’s quality of living and has made their home a more enjoyable and functional space. All whilst adding value to her property and keeping busy with a DIY project. She also received £500 home improvement vouchers as her prize. Perhaps we should all take a tool out of Shereena’s belt and pick up those paintbrushes?
